Jim Ramo
Former CEO

Jim Ramo is a senior business executive with over 30 years of experience in the delivery of entertainment and information.  His general management business experience spans all the major distribution technologies and business platforms from broadcasting and cable to satellite and the internet.  He is currently consulting in the media industry.

Jim was most recently the CEO of Movielink, LLC, a position he held from the company’s inception.  Movielink was a joint venture of five movie studios: MGM, Paramount, Sony Pictures, Universal, and Warner Bros.  Launched in 2002, Movielink’s purpose was to initiate the first legal and secure, video-on-demand business delivering major motion picture studio movies over the internet, effectively opening the internet as a new, viable channel of distribution for professionally produced video.  Movielink delivered over 1 million movies per year to consumers in the United States and was instrumental in opening new IP based business models for the studios.  In August 2007, the company was sold to Blockbuster Entertainment, Inc.

From 2000 to 2001, Jim was CEO in residence at Shelter Ventures, LLC initiating investment opportunities in new media for this $200 million fund.    Prior to Shelter Ventures, Jim was CEO of Geocast Network Systems, and COO of TVN Entertainment, from 1997 to 1999.

From 1985 to 1997, Jim was an executive at Hughes Electronics.  He was part of the founding team of DirecTV, the industry leading DBS company.  Jim was Executive Vice President, responsible for all sales and marketing, programming acquisition, and customer service for the company.  From opening the consumer electronics industry as a retailer for this new digital service to doing deals with all major studios, cable programmers and professional sports leagues, Jim created and managed the business relationships of the fastest growing consumer service of the 1990’s.  Jim was an original employee of DirecTV and as the company grew, he came to manage over 1,500 people.

As a Vice President of   Hughes Communications, prior to DirecTV, he delivered over $1.5Billion of satellite transponder sales and leases for the company.  Prior to Hughes, Jim was a Vice President of operations at Times Mirror Cable Television, a international Product Manager at TRW Datacom International(working primarily in Western European markets and Japan), and a Director of Finance at CBS Television.

Jim has a M.S. degree from London School of Economics and a B.A. from University of California, Berkeley.  Jim has two grown children and he and his wife live in Los Angeles.
