In the late 1980's, he helped pioneer low cost fiber optic systems for last mile installations. Over the following fifteen year period, he led development and installation of systems ranging from metro DWDM to long-haul fiber optic communications. One installation provided the first fiber connection between Moscow and St. Petersburg in the new Russia. Most recently his work assignments have been in fiber optic networks ranging from Fiber-To-The Home to 10 Gbps data transport. Mr. Askegard has worked for large telecommunications equipment manufacturers [Ericsson, DSC (now part of Alcatel-Lucent), Andrew Corporation, and ADC Telecommunications] managing relationships with some of the large service providers (MCI, Sprint, Bell Companies). For the past few years he has been guiding emerging telecom startup companies with launching their systems or component product lines (Santel, LaserComm, Centerpoint Broadband, Novera, Phasebridge, LuminentOIC). He joined ITT Defense Systems in 2007 as a Program Manager to oversee the development of communications systems in the defense industry. Mr. Askegard is well known for his volunteer leadership in the IEEE where he currently serves as Chair of the Southern Area of Region 6, representing over 11,000 members in the greater Los Angeles area. As a Senior Member of the IEEE, he actively supports the local Communications Society and is program chair for the local Section. The most rewarding aspect of these activities is to encourage and assist students to study science & technology topics enabling them to become tomorrow's engineers. |
